In this workshop, students will learn how to combine acrylic painting with the photographic process of cyanotype, popularly known as “sunprints”. We learn how to mix, apply, and store cyanotype chemistry, methods of exposure such as direct exposure photograms with objects and using painted acetate screens, and techniques to paint acrylic layers over and under cyanotype that preserve or subvert the exposed image. We will be looking at artists like Karewith Casas, Julia Whitney Barnes, Tura Oliveira, and others for inspiration. By the end of the workshop, students will have completed at least one fully integrated cyanotype-acrylic painting, created a variety of exciting experimental test pages, and understand how to bring these materials independently into their own studio practice.
